Following on from a teaching career and a fairly strict religious upbringing, Tom’s interests lay in both the classics and Scottish history. He was surprised to find that this western region of Serbia had historical Celtic connections as witnessed by local names including ‘Tara’, as well as contact directly with his homeland through the nursing efforts of Evelina Haverfield, daughter of Lord Abinger, and a heroine for the people of Serbia during and immediately following WW1 who lies buried in the local churchyard in Bajina Basta. His sculpture entitled solar disc marks the emergence of early Scottish Christianity from Paganism. It combines the early Scottish Cross with the Pagan ritual of the summer solstice, and was positioned to allow the first summer sunray to flood through one of the apertures. In turn, although possibly subconsciously, Tom carved out three apertures and two fissures, a portrayal of our immediate family.
