Paul had progressed his earlier work in fired clay to encompass wire framed animals and had been taking commissions for life size work including horses. He continued to follow his original theme whereby the work should fit into the environment, whilst at the same time working within his known portfolio of large working horses. The theme of the Trojan Horse was inescapable, however the artist did not want to portray any stereotypical image, and the final object of wooden tiles nailed to plywood bolted to a welded metal frame, with the inclusion of a small wire horse inside the body, was synonymously designed to symbolise the strength of the locally renowned black horse (‘Vrnac’) with the maternalistic foal. The location chosen to show the black horse ensured a prominent position on the skyline that has convinced many a passer-by into thinking that the horse was real!
