DARKO PETROVIC  born 2000   GVOZDAC, SERBIA

Incredibly here was a budding artist right under our noses. The son of our neighbour brought up by his grandparents, father and uncle in a small hillside village. At the age of 6 using ordinary crayons which we gave him he drew a house, not just a box with a roof, two windows and a door but a level of complexity associated with someone much more mature. Fortunately his school teachers recognised that his talent needed to be encouraged to flourish and he was guided to the high school in Uzice where he was mentored by his teacher Biljana Kovacevic. She similarly saw his potential talent and helped to place him in Trebinje Arts Faculty in BiH, an outreach of Sarajevo University where he is now in his last year mastering many elements of the art world and torn between the desire to work in three dimensions whilst continuing with his portraiture work at which he excels.

We first encouraged Darko to spend part of his summer break from Trebinje on the Breg effectively in an uninhibited workspace where he could gain work experience. We helped him with assistance to master new tools including electric drills, angle grinders and a chain saw working predominantly in wood. In 2019 we walked through a part of the woodland on the hill which we had ironically purchased from his family (our neighbours) some years earlier. A few feet up the trunk of a mature beech tree was a burr, examining it together the idea of a living carving was discussed. Over the ensuing weeks 'SNOWY OWL' emerged. It now sits in the woodland along a part of the curving stone path handsomely lit and at times even drawing the attention of our indigenous barn owls.

In 2019/20 Darko wanted to try working in galvanised metal wire taking a lead from an early piece created by Paul Smith during Prostor 2001. In so doing he created an extremely symbolic piece on a mound on the hill, namely a 'GRIFFON VULTURE'. This large bird of prey can often be seen soaring over our hill in the thermals having flown over from its nearby feeding and nesting site immediately overlooking the very place Tija was born and raised, another of life's full circles was documented. The initial feathers added to the sculpture were given to us by the park ranger from the nearby bird sanctuary. As with so many of the sculptures, their pristine condition deteriorates rapidly in the harsh climate and renovations are carried out wherever possible. The bird is mounted on an old natural branch of local blackthorn.

On returning from his 2nd year at university Darko was keen to show us not only his talent in graphic portraiture, but in turn his increasing ability to utilise other mediums including plaster of paris and clay, together resulting in him producing a head (informally named 'ROBESPIERRE').
